There’s a new comptroller riding into Austin.
This week, Gov. Greg Abbott announced his appointment of former State Sen. Don Huffines to serve as the next comptroller of public accounts for Texas. Huffines was appointed following the early resignation of interim comptroller Kelly Hancock, who himself was appointed to replace former comptroller Glenn Hegar.
Huffines, who served in the Texas Senate from 2015 to 2019, defeated Hancock in the primary election earlier this year for the role. As part of his campaign, Huffines promised to “DOGE Texas” and seek out waste and abuse to cut from Texas government.
The appointment makes Huffines the chief financial officer for the state and the new incumbent heading into the November general election. Huffines will face Democrat Sarah Eckhardt, a state senator and former Travis County judge, in the general election.
