Three-Way Comptroller Primary Set as Marquee 2026 Race

Texas Republican primary voters will be casting their ballots in a competitive three-way race to decide the state’s top financial officer next year.

Earlier this year, Gov. Greg Abbott appointed former State Sen. Kelly Hancock to be the new comptroller for Texas following the resignation of Comptroller Glenn Hegar. Hancock quickly announced his plans to run for a full term in the position. However, he won’t have a clear shot to the nomination, as two prominent Texas Republicans have lined up to oppose him.

Businessman and former State Sen. Don Huffines announced his candidacy for comptroller earlier in the year with a pledge to “DOGE Texas.” Texas Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick also announced her candidacy for the office, pledging to take her leadership from the Railroad Commission to work for Texans as comptroller.

The three-way race between a trio of Texas Republican heavyweights showcases the stakes of electing the state’s next top financial officer. The comptroller is charge of managing the state’s finances, collecting funds, and ensuring accountability related to state money.

The primary election for this office will be held in March 2026.
