Gov. Greg Abbott will face a Republican primary challenger in March.

State Board of Education member Evelyn Brooks filed a treasurer appointment earlier this month to challenge Abbott in the March primary for governor. On Thursday, Brooks confirmed to The Pioneer in a phone call that she intends to run for governor in 2026.

Brooks represents District 14 on the State Board of Education, which includes several counties in the North and Central Texas areas, including parts of Denton, Dallas, and Johnson counties.

According to her biography on the State Board of Education website, Brooks is a graduate of Bowie State University and previously taught for Denver Public Schools and Fairfax County Public Schools. Her biography also says she has “extensive experience educating and helping youth to develop a Biblical worldview, challenging them to strive for excellence, to think independently, and to develop self-discipline and self-control.”

Abbott is seeking his fourth term in office in 2026. In his last primary election in 2022, Abbott defeated several high-profile challengers to claim the Republican nomination once again.

The primary election will be held in March 2026.
