Firefighter Sent to Hospital in Sunday Night Fire

One Amarillo firefighter was sent to a local hospital with possible heat exhaustion on Sunday night.

According to the Amarillo Fire Department, crews were dispatched to a structure fire at 712 Southwest 17th Avenue on Sunday night, where a single story residence was found with heavy smoke coming from the rear. Shortly after crews arrived, a large amount of fire broke out from the rear or the building and through the roof of the structure, prompting a second alarm.

Fighting through multiple structural additions, crews called the fire under control at 7:54pm. The house had been empty for a while and there were no utilities to the structure.

The Amarillo Fire Marshal reports the origin of the fire to be the floor of an addition near the rear of the house. The cause of the fire is undetermined and damage is estimated at $100,000. One firefighter was sent to a local hospital with reports of possible heat exhaustion, although there is no word yet on his condition.
