One Dead Following Train, Car Collision

One person has died following a collision that saw a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train strike a vehicle over the weekend.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers were dispatched on Sunday to the 500 block of North Eastern Street at the railroad tracks. Officers were told that a train versus vehicle collision had taken place.

APD reports that a gold 2004 Chevrolet Impala had been southbound on Eastern Street. The driver disregarded the railroad crossing gates and was struck by an oncoming BNSF train. Authorities say that the train hit the driver's side of the vehicle.

Steven Sorrells, 27, was identified as the driver of the Chevrolet. Sorrells died from his injuries.

The incident is being investigated by the APD Traffic Investigation Unit.
