The following is a compilation of the unedited responses from Robert Taylor, candidate for Potter County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2, to the 2018 Amarillo Pioneer Voter Guide Questionnaire. Taylor is running in the March 6th Republican primary against incumbent Richard Herman. The winner of the Republican Party's nomination will face Democrat Claudia Griego in November.

Name:

Robert Taylor

Office Sought:

Potter County Justice of the Peace

Why did you decide to run for office?

I observed some ethical issues that are incompatible with the office, the lack of availability of the Judge not only in the office but when called out. The principle of brokering ones responsibilities to other County JP's is not what one should be elected to do. I believe and intend to instill Ethical, Fair, Impartial and availability coupled with dignity for all citizens to the Office of JP2.

Please list any of your political, civic or non-profit experience.

I have ran for Sheriff on two occasions. I am a member of the Fraternal Order for the last 21 years and the Potter County Deputy Sheriff's Association (PCDSA) for the last 24 years since it's founding. I have held offices of State Secretary, Sergeant of Arms and 2nd Vice President of the State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police. On the local level I have been the President of PCDSA at different times for 14 years and Immediate President for 7 years along with being the current Vice President. In 1996 I was instrumental in bringing the "Shop With A Cop"(registered trademark) program to the Amarillo Area. Now known as FOP Cops and Kids, we just finished our 22nd year of taking kids Christmas shopping, intertwining with local police officers, DPS Troopers, and deputy sheriffs while providing need clothing and a toy or two for those children needing assistance. I have participated in local area as Make-a-Wish Chili cook off, Downtown Chamber Cook offs and for many years with the Hilltop Senior Citizens providing Thanksgiving Lunches to the community. It has been an enjoyable ride.

What is your educational background?

I graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1973. After Military Service I attended Amarillo College and obtained an degree in Criminal Justice and later a degree in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. I have had an additional 4500 hours studies to include death investigation and other Law Enforcement aspects of the criminal justice system over the last 40 years.

What experience do you have that qualifies you for this position?

I am a Master Police Officer Licensed by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement. My over 34 years experience in Law Enforcement from the local area, From Amarillo PD, Potter County Sheriff Office, Airport Police, Officer at Amarillo College and Lake Tanglewood has given me the ability to work with the many aspects of the Criminal Justice system and the diverse make up of the community. I believe I have the earned the Trust and Integrity of those around me and would instill the "Spirit of the Law" in the JP 2 Office.

How will you best represent the community that elected you?

My number one goal would be working with the other three Justice's of the Peace in order to have a smooth operation in the entire County. It is not just about me but the citizens of Precinct 2 and Potter County. Our image throughout the country is also on display by having 2 interstate highways passing through the County. Allowing access to the Office by being available and handling my own work load in an ethical way with Integrity and Fairness for all who I come in contact with.

Are you supported by Amarillo Matters?

No

How are you better suited than your opponent(s) to serve in the position that you are running for?

My years of experience in the Law Enforcement Field, Military Training and education along with an additional 4500 hours of training in accident investigation, death investigations, numerous other aspects of being a police officer/Deputy Sheriff and working within the Criminal Justice System give me a better grasp of the position that are unmatched by my opponent.

Why should voters choose you on March 6th?

I am the best qualified candidate. My background of service to our nation and local community, education and experience show my integrity, community trust and 100% dedication to the people of not only Precinct 2, but Amarillo as a whole within Potter and Randall Counties. I am and will continue to be ethical not only in my private life but in the Office of Justice of Peace Precinct 2. Equal justice for all with dignity no matter political, ethnicity or religious background. Their are some in this arena that talk the talk, my promise: "I WILL WALK THE WALK!"
