In the race for Texas Agriculture Commissioner, incumbent Sid Miller is being challenged in the primary election by honey manufacturer Nathan Sheets. The race has drawn heavy attention as Miller has come under fire from Sheets’ campaign, and many state officeholders have endorsed the challenger.
Sheets has earned many important endorsements in his primary challenge to Miller. However, none have completely convinced us that he’s the right guy to serve as our state’s next agriculture czar. Much to the contrary, we believe voters should keep Miller in his job for another four years.
Miller has been willing to take on conservative fights more often than just about any statewide elected official. This includes getting involved in Amarillo-specific political matters at times when it was important someone stepped up. Consider that Miller stopped funding for The RANGE at a time when real questions were being raised about their operation’s support by local taxpayers. Miller also stepped up to defend Ronny Jackson when the then-candidate was up for election for the first time and facing attacks from the Amarillo establishment.
Throughout his tenure as Agriculture Commissioner, Miller has shown that he’s not afraid to champion a cause, even when nobody else is willing to step out. And it’s exactly why voters should keep him in his current role.
We recommend Sid Miller for Texas Agriculture Commissioner.
Early voting runs from February 17 through February 27. Election Day is Tuesday, March 3.
