The filing period for candidates interested in running in the upcoming 2026 primary opened on Saturday, November 8th.
Two high-profile races already set to feature open contests are Potter County Judge and Texas House District 86.
In Potter County, Judge Nancy Tanner has announced she will not seek another term. Attorney Michelle Eggleston, who appears to have the backing of Tanner and former Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson, has filed a treasurer appointment following speculation she would enter the race. She may face opposition from Potter County Commissioner Precinct 3 John Coffee, who has publicly stated he is considering a run.
Meanwhile, Texas House District 86, which includes Randall County, will also see an open race, as long-time representative John Smithee is not seeking another term. Smithee has served since 1985.
The deadline to file is December 8th. Those interested in running will file with the party they are seeking to nominate them. The primary election will be held on Tuesday, March 3rd. The 2026 general election will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd.
