John Smithee Won't Seek Reelection

John Smithee (R-Amarillo), one of the longest serving members of the Texas State House, will not seek another term in office.

Smithee has represented District 86 since 1985. His district includes Randall County and much of the western Panhandle. He won his most recent reelection in 2024, following a heated primary election.

Smithee’s decision to not seek another term will mean Amarillo’s delegation in Austin will be dominated by relative newcomers. Caroline Fairly, who represents Potter County and much of the northern Panhandle, was first elected in 2024. Kevin Sparks, who represents most of the Panhandle and Permian Basin in the Texas Senate, was first elected in 2022.

The 2026 Primary Election is set for March 3rd. The general election is set for November. Jamie Haynes, who challenged Smithee in the 2024 primary, has already announced her intent to make another run for the seat.
