Eggleston Files as Tanner Announces She Won't Seek Reelection

Amarillo attorney Michelle Eggleston has filed paperwork appointing a campaign treasurer, confirming rumors she is planning to run for Potter County Judge.

As we had previously reported, she had been rumored to have the backing of incumbent Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner, as well as former Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson. While we cannot yet confirm she has the backing of these two, Tanner has since confirmed she is not seeking another term.

“There is a time to lead and a time to hand over the reins,” wrote Judge Tanner in a Facebook post. “I know in my heart that now is the time for me to step aside and make way for a fresh leader—someone ready to bring new energy, new ideas, and new solutions to the big challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our county.”

While Eggleston does not appear to have formally kicked off her campaign, we have found what appears to be her campaign Facebook, Instagram, and website. The website page has an endorsements page, though the names of Tanner and Nelson are absent.

According to an issues page, Eggleston feels many of the county’s challenges “are all symptoms of years without a clear direction.” She also plans to leverage her legal experience to assist with the portion of the job dealing with probate matters.

While Eggleston is the first to file paperwork in the race, she will likely face competition for the county’s top job. Commissioner John Coffee, who represents Precinct 3, has previously said he is considering running.

Filing for the 2026 primary closes on December 8th.
