Local medical leader Holly Jeffreys has launched her candidacy for the Texas House seat being vacated by Rep. John Smithee (R-Amarillo).

Jeffreys, a Canyon-based family nurse practitioner and Bushland ISD trustee, announced her candidacy this week to replace Smithee. On her website, Jeffreys highlights campaign issues like healthcare shortages and agriculture as some of her top priorities.

Well known for her Republican advocacy and work with the nursing program at West Texas A&M University, Jeffreys is also known for her work as a trustee on the Bushland ISD Board. She currently serves as vice president of the school board.

Jeffreys joins Jamie Haynes, a Canyon realtor, in the race for Smithee’s seat. The primary election is scheduled for March 2026.
