A controversial water sale to data processing company Fermi America was approved by the City Council during its meeting on Tuesday.
The sale of the water, which will guarantee the company up to 2.5 million gallons of water per day at a rate of $8.72 per gallon, was passed unanimously on Tuesday night. The item’s approval followed hours of public comment on the topic, with numerous citizens expressing concerns about the deal. Meanwhile, citizens in support of the agreement expressed optimism that the Fermi America project will create new technology jobs in Amarillo.
The City Council’s approval gives a green light to a preliminary deal, with a final deal on the horizon.
Fermi America is set to build a new data processing center in the Panhandle in the coming years. While the project will likely not be located within the Amarillo city limits, the water deal ensures that the City of Amarillo will provide the company with water for its project.
