Read the Abortion Ordinances Being Considered by Amarillo City Council

City Council during the Tuesday work session.

Amarillo City Council discussed three ordinances seeking to restrict abortions during a three-hour work session on Tuesday. The Amarillo Pioneer has obtained copies of the ordinances discussed, which can be downloaded at the end of this article.

Ordinance A, the shortest of the three options considered by the council, was drafted by City Attorney Brian McWilliams. McWilliams also noted during the work session that he had not yet read the other two options, both of which were only added as options shortly before the work session.

The council did not reach a solid consensus supporting any particular ordinance, though there were changes suggested for each ordinance. Mayor Cole Stanley did state he would like to see action taken in January on some form of restriction, though some other members of the council expressed a desire to hold another work session.

It appears the council plans to use the recently launched City Council Forum website to suggest specific changes to the draft ordinances.
