Former television meteorologist Mark Ronchetti will be the Republican nominee for New Mexico governor this year after defeating four other candidates to claim his party’s nomination for the job on Tuesday night.
According to unofficial election results from New Mexico, Ronchetti won the support of 58 percent of Republican primary voters, defeating his next closest competitor, State Rep. Rebecca Dow, who won the support of 16 percent of primary voters. Rounding out the field was former Bernalillo Republican chairman Greg Zanetti at 14 percent, Sandoval County Commissioner Jay Block at 11 percent, and activist Ethel Maharg at 2 percent.
With Ronchetti’s victory, he now moves on to the general election to take on incumbent Democrat Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. While Grisham won her first term handily in 2018, she has seen a steady stream of controversies during her tenure, as well as political projections indicating the race for governor may be closer this year than expected.
Voters will decide the general election race in November.
