'Park Hills' Replacing Lee Elementary School

Lee Elementary School will soon be a thing of the past in Amarillo.

On Monday night, the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to rename Lee Elementary School in Amarillo to Park Hills Elementary. The move came following years of debate over a possible renaming, with school board trustees voting earlier this year to being a process that eventually led to the renaming on Monday night.

While there was opposition to the renaming, several members of the community reacted positively to the decision to change the name of the school.

“Our district took a positive step forward in making sure we create a learning environment that builds up every child,” the Amarillo Education Association said in a Facebook post.

The renaming also marks the second time the school’s name has been altered in the past two years. In early 2018, trustees voted 4-3 to remove “Robert E.” from the school’s name.

Also, during the meeting, trustees announced that Debra McCartt, David Nance, Bradley Phillips, Kayla Mendez, John Betancourt, and Claudia Stuart would be finalists to replace either John Ben Blanchard or Renee McCown on the board.
