Lee Elementary Renaming on AISD Agenda Next Week

Is Lee Elementary School set to get its second renaming in two years? We might find out next week.

On Tuesday, the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees will consider taking action on a request by the Amarillo NAACP to consider changing the name of Lee Elementary School. The agenda item will include a possible action to authorize administrators to “initiate the process to consider renaming” the school.

The Amarillo ISD Board most recently voted 4-3 in 2018 to take “Robert E.” off of Lee Elementary School’s facade. Trustees James Allen, John Betancourt, and John Ben Blanchard voted against the proposal.

NAACP members and other area advocates have been pushing since the original renaming to change the school’s name again. Many advocates have promoted Park Hills Elementary as a possible alternative to the current name.

Trustees will meet for the discussion on Tuesday, May 21st at 6PM in the AISD Education Support Center (7200 I-40 West).
