New Sign Up at Lee Elementary School

Lee Elementary School has a new look.

This month, a new sign was erected at Lee Elementary School in North Amarillo. The sign now displays the namesake of the school as "Lee Elementary School," dropping Robert E. from the original signage.

As we previously reported, the Amarillo Independent School District Board of Trustees voted 4-3 earlier this year to drop "Robert E." from the school's name. Trustees James Allen, John Ben Blanchard, and John Betancourt voted against the change.

The 4-3 vote left many on either side of the issue disappointed that a final verdict was not reached on changing the school's name or leaving it as it was. Several outspoken proponents of the change recommended renaming the school Park Hills Elementary, while opponents of the change preferred to leave Robert E. Lee's full name on the signage.

An official cost on the change of the signage has not been released to the public.
