Thornberry Backs House Approval of National Defense Budget

Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) helped the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019 sail to approval in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.

On Thursday, the House voted 351-66 to approved the NDAA of 2019, with Thornberry backing its approval. The Clarendon attorney spoke on the House floor, and backed its approval, alongside Republican House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wisconsin).

The best way to summarize this bill is that it takes the next steps,” Thornberry said on the House floor, prior to the vote. “The next steps to rebuilding our military and reforming the Pentagon, the next steps towards strengthening our country's national security.”

During the bill's approval by House members, 59 Democrats and 7 Republicans voted against authorizing the 2019 NDAA. 10 House members were not present for the vote.

According to the Hill, the bill packs a $717 billion defense budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Breaking down the total, the bill features some big ticket items, including: $617 billion in base spending and $22 billion for nuclear programs.
