"In light of the recent tragedy resulting in the death of a three year old in neighboring New Mexico, the Bi-City-County Health District’s Environmental Health department would like to remind all citizens who utilize on-site-sewage facilities (septic systems) to assess their systems and ensure that the tank access riser lids are secured to prevent unauthorized entry. This is especially important after a system has been serviced by a licensed pumping contractor. Here are a few things to look for:
Know where your system is located on your property
Check for any cracks or breaks on the exposed lids twice per year
Make sure the lids are fully secured with fasteners that require a tool to remove
