Environmental Health Recognizes Water Safety

"As we prepare to head into the months filled with swimming, fishing, boating, and other recreational water activities, the City of Amarillo’s Environmental Health department encourages everyone to practice water safety as part of National Water Safety Month. Each May, the Water Safety Month campaign is conducted to inform everyone about proper water safety measures.

Be sure to stay alert and practice the following water safety tips which can help keep you and your family safe this summer while enjoying the water:

  1. Teach children to swim

  2. Never leave children unattended even if they can swim

  3. Do not use pool noodles or arm floaties as a replacement for life jackets

  4. Always wear a lifejacket when boating

  5. Have a phone close in case of an emergency

  6. Secure residential pools

  7. Never swim alone

  8. Don’t forget the sunscreen

  9. Avoid swimming while sick

  10. Ensure all drain covers are secured
