APD: Collision Leaves Three Dead, Two Hospitalized

The Amarillo Police Department is reporting that a Saturday collision left three dead and two hospitalized in Amarillo.

APD reports that on Saturday morning, a 16-foot flatbed trailer came loose from a Ford pickup and veered into construction in the eastbound lanes of I-40, west of Whitaker Road. The trailer hit the rear of a paving machine involved in construction and 5 J. Lee Milligan employees that were on or around the machinery.

The trailer continued on and turned over, dumping its load of sand on a construction crew pickup.

The driver of the Ford came back to the scene and was interviewed by investigators. Traffic investigators have recovered part of the hitch hardware that fell off the trailer and may have allowed for the trailer to come loose from the pickup.

Three were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were transported to the hospital.

No charges have been filed.
