The following is a compilation of the unedited responses from Len Walker, candidate for Potter County Court-at-Law #1, to the 2018 Amarillo Pioneer Voter Guide Questionnaire. Walker is running in the March 6th Republican primary against Amarillo attorneys Walt Weaver and Kerry Brian Haney.

Name:

Len Walker

Office Sought:

Potter County Court-at-Law #1

Why did you decide to run for office?

Having spent significant time on both sides of the bar, I firmly believe it is time for me to apply my experience to resolve legal issues as a judge. I have the disposition, demeanor, knowledge and experience to excel at the position.

Please list any of your political, civic or non-profit experience.

My family dedicates time and resources to several non-profits in our community, but I choose to keep that private.

What is your educational background?

University of Tulsa College of Law, JD; West Texas State University, BBA; and US Navy Advanced Electronics Program (Submarine).

What experience do you have that qualifies you for this position?

The Navy taught me how to solve problems as an analyst, and that is what I do to this very day. I evaluate cases in a straight forward objective manner without allowing emotions or personal bias to get in the way. All cases have two opinions or views, and if you let bias get involved, its a good way to set yourself up for failure. Facts always dictate results under applicable law, and I have followed that approach in hundreds if not thousands of cases and dozens upon dozens of jury trials with great success.

How will you best represent the community that elected you?

The people of Potter County can rely upon me to execute the duties as Judge for County Court at Law 1 without hesitation or failure. I will work to immediately identify and eliminate issues causing delay or excess cost, and cases will move forward efficiently. The court will be in good hands, and I will make the people proud of Court 1.

Are you supported by Amarillo Matters?

No

How are you better suited than your opponent(s) to serve in the position that you are running for?

Most cases before Court 1 are criminal and family with a few general civil matters. Those areas track my law practice and experience over a twenty five year career. In addition to family law and criminal defense, I dedicated seven years of my career as a prosecutor that handled violent crime felonies from aggravated assault up to and including murder cases at trial. Being a Judge requires oversight and management of trials. I simply don't understand how anyone thinks they could properly issue fair rulings and decisions without extensive trial experience in both criminal and family law.

Why should voters choose you on March 6th?

At my core, I am exactly what a Judge should be, a firm believer in this system without being a cheerleader for either side. In my career, I made plenty of police officers mad as a prosecutor because they lacked sufficient evidence, and by the same token, I have refused many clients that did not possess an actionable case. In my court, cases lacking merit will be dismissed, meritorious cases will proceed, and the guilty will be punished according to the facts. Every case will be viewed with complete objectivity and fairness, just as the people of Potter County rightfully demand.
