In Potter County Precinct 2, County Commissioner Blair Schaffer has put his name on the ballot for another term in office. Schaffer has drawn a Republican opponent for the first time in his political career in the form of businessman Jeff Raef.
This cycle, we are recommending voters make a change and give Raef a chance to shake up Potter County.
Schaffer should be commended for connecting with his constituents on social media and in town halls. However, we believe Raef’s focus on the fiscal issues facing the county — like paying for a new jail without using certificates of obligation, and holding the line on property taxes — is exactly what the county needs today.
Raef, who is the founder of Raef’s Hardwood Flooring, has been campaigning on his business acumen and concerns about rising property taxes. Raef has correctly pointed out that property taxes have been increased every year for the past four years and is sounding the alarm on what the use of certificates of obligation could due to the tax rate if that’s how the county decides to finance a new jail.
At a recent debate, Raef also discussed the fact that the county commissioners should be more outspoken in the fight over closing neighborhood schools in AISD, saying that commissioners should advocate to stop school closures in their districts. This shows Raef’s grasp of the fact that commissioners must be advocates for their districts — not simply part-timers who show up to a meeting every two weeks.
Change for the sake of change isn’t always necessary. However, in this case, Raef brings something new to the table that is desperately needed on the commissioners’ court. And it’s why voters in Precinct 2 should trust Raef with their votes.
We recommend Jeff Raef for Potter County Commissioner Precinct 2.
Early voting runs from February 17 through February 27. Election Day is Tuesday, March 3.
