Film Review: White is Electric in 'Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere'

The Amarillo Pioneer’s Film Review series is back, covering many of the big releases that will be greeting audiences soon. Today’s review is for the new film “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” starring Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong.

There’s real power in the music of Bruce Springsteen. The iconic rocker’s fame has transcended generations as people from all walks of life have connected with the stories he presents in his songs. In the new film “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” one of The Boss’ most famous examples of narrative storytelling in music is examined in detail.

The film, which stars Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) as the titular rocker, focuses on the period of Springsteen’s career coming off the success of The River. After the album’s incredible success and a string of sold-out concerts, Springsteen retreats to a rental house near his hometown to take a break and, ultimately, to work on new material. Much of the new material he records on a portable recorder at the rental house in Colts Neck, New Jersey, ends up providing the tracks that would become one of his most famous records, Nebraska.

While some audiences might find an entire film focusing on the recording of a single album as a bit of a strange proposition, the film really is a spectacle to behold. White is electric in his portrayal of Springsteen and has a strong command of the musician’s voice and mannerisms. He provides a compelling portrayal of the musician as he battles depression while recording Nebraska and many of the early versions of the songs that would go on to become perhaps Springsteen’s best-known album, Born in the U.S.A. The film’s showcase of the great lengths to which the recording studio went to retain the haunting sound of the original Nebraska recordings is also interesting and will thrill music nerds and Springsteen fans, alike.

Aside from White, Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Springsteen’s manager is also a riveting performance, as is the performance of Odessa Young as Springsteen’s love interest, Faye Romano.

If you have the chance, catch “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” in theaters while you can — if for no other reason than to witness White’s incredible performance as one of rock’s greatest icons.
