City Council to Discuss Civic Center Lawsuit in Executive Session

Amarillo City Council is set to consult with the city’s legal team regarding the Civic Center lawsuit during an executive session ahead of Tuesday’s regular meeting.

As we have previously reported, the lawsuit began when businessman Alex Fairly sued to halt the issuance of tax anticipation notes passed by the previous city council meant to fund renovations to the Amarillo Civic Center Complex. The city lost at both the trial court and on appeal, where the courts voided the tax notes and ordered the city to pay Fairly attorney’s fees.

Following their loss in the Seventh Court of Appeals, the city’s legal team was granted a motion for an extended deadline to request a rehearing. This surprised many in the public, as the newly elected council members were all backed by Fairly. Mayor Cole Stanley, while campaigning, even said he supported the city dropping its appeal.

After the council consults with the city’s lawyers regarding the lawsuit, the council will switch gears to discuss Deputy City Manager Andrew Freeman’s employment. Freeman is expected to be officially appointed Interim City Manager during the regular meeting.

The executive session will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and will not be open to the public. The regular meeting will be held at 3:00 p.m. and will be open to the public.
