Agenda for Second City Council Onboarding Workshop Released

The agenda for the second onboarding workshop of Amarillo City Council has been released. The meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, May 30th, follows a similar meeting held earlier this week.

At the first onboarding workshop, the council discussed the Texas Open Meetings Act, the Texas Public Information Act, ethics, city council meeting protocol, and agenda management software before entering an executive session for security training. While that meeting, which was held in City Hall Room 105, was not live-streamed, The Amarillo Pioneer was in attendance and made an audio recording.

At the upcoming onboarding workshop, there will be a presentation and discussion on topics including building safety, capital projects development & engineering, community development, water and sewer utilities, planning, public works, and the office of emergency management. According to the agenda, “no votes will be taken or decisions made during this educational meeting.”

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 8:30 am at the Simms Municipal Building, located at 808 S. Buchanan. The meeting had previously been scheduled for 8:00 am. In response to a question from The Amarillo Pioneer about the meeting time, Mayor Cole Stanley confirmed the meeting would begin at 8:30 “even though the notice states 8:00.” Mayor Stanley also noted that the council “can’t start before the time but can start late.” We had also previously reported that a third onboarding workshop meeting was scheduled for June 6th, though it appears that meeting has been canceled. The next regular meeting of the council is scheduled for Tuesday, June 13th.

Updated 5/27/2023 6:45 pm to include clarification from Mayor Stanley about the meeting time.
