Before Politics, This Amarillo City Council Candidate Had An Acting Career

In February, 23 people filed for spots on the Amarillo City Council ballot, hoping to claim a seat on the city’s top governing board. While this would be the first campaign for many of the contenders, for one candidate, it wouldn’t be her first time in the spotlight.

Sherie Wood, an Amazon employee who is running for Amarillo City Council, Place 1, had an acting career several years before she launched her candidacy for office. According to Wood’s IMDb page, she logged two film appearances — a role as Swap Meet Patron in “Revelation Road: The Black Rider” and a role as a member of Redneck Family in “Dearly De-Parted.”

During an interview for The Amarillo Pioneer Podcast, Wood discussed her acting career and the fun she had making a few appearances on-screen.

“I enjoyed it and I enjoy acting because I’ve been acting ever since high school,” Wood said, discussing her role in “Revelation Road: The Black Rider.” “I was in my high school theater and I’m also a singer. I’ve been singing since I was 4 years old and I started in my church singing. And now, every now and then, whenever they have auditions at the Amarillo Little Theatre or Amarillo Opera, I will go and audition. As a matter of fact, I recently was in the musical ‘Guys and Dolls,’ and I enjoyed it tremendously. It was my first musical with Amarillo Little Theatre and I appreciate them having me be a part of their community.”

Wood is currently running for Amarillo City Council, Place 1, facing six opponents in the May 6 election: businessman Dean Crump, antique store owner Chip Hunt, claims analyst Kelsey Richardson, firefighter Josh Craft, chaplain Margie Gonzales, and retiree Ray White. This field happens to be the largest field seeking this particular seat in the city’s history. Still, Wood is unphased by the challenges ahead.

“I’m the voice for the people,” Wood said in her interview.

As Wood notes on her IMDb, “Dreams are never too far out of reach if you can accomplish them.” And for Wood, her campaign for the City Council seems like a dream that is worth chasing.
