Recommendation: Greg Abbott is Better Option for Texas Governor

By Amarillo Pioneer Editorial Board

For Texas governor, voters have six candidates asking for their votes this year — with only two candidates who have shown any real chance of winning the race.

In the March Republican primary election, our editorial board recommended voters support former State Sen. Don Huffines. Huffines, who received about 12 percent of the vote statewide, did not win the nomination, and conceded to Abbott. Despite a fierce primary battle between the two former foes, Huffines is now supporting Abbott and the entire statewide Republican ticket to lead Texas again for another four years.

We agree fully with Senator Huffines.

Of the two leading candidates for governor — Abbott and former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke — Abbott is the better choice for Texans. Abbott is not going to support the same level of disastrous policies promoted by O’Rourke and at least provides some hope that further property tax relief could be delivered for Texans.

This is not to say that Abbott should get a free pass for his actions over the past eight years. Abbott did keep Texas shut down unnecessarily during 2020 and he has allowed taxing entities to run roughshod over taxpayers. Still, Abbott is the better option of the current leading candidates for governor.

If a voter cannot stomach Abbott as their choice on their ballot, then we would direct voters to consider write-in candidate Mark V. Goloby, who previously ran for Comptroller of Public Accounts as a Republican. Goloby is campaigning on a platform of taxpayer advocacy. Libertarian Mark Tippetts also provides support for many of the same issues as Goloby with a libertarian twist.

Still, Abbott and O’Rourke are the two most likely candidates to win in November. And of the two, Abbott is the better choice to lead Texas for another four years.

We recommend Greg Abbott for Governor.
