Amarillo Police are investigating a fatal crash in the 1800 block of Lakeside Drive that occurred on Monday.

According to APD, on Monday, August 2, at 4:44pm, officers were dispatched to a crash in the 1800 block of Lakeside Drive. A semi truck and trailer was stopped southbound at the red light at Lakeside and the I-40 frontage road. A 2016 GMC 2500, driven by a 45-year-old male, had been traveling southbound in the 1800 block of Lakeside at a high rate of speed behind the semi.

The driver of the GMC failed to control speed, causing the front left of the GMC to strike the back right of the semi trailer.

Officers say the driver of the GMC died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson was notified.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

This incident is being investigated by APD’s Traffic Investigation Squad.
