Abbott Announces Special Session Agenda

Gov. Greg Abbott has announced his agenda for the upcoming special session of the Texas Legislature.

In a proclamation issued this week, Abbott outlined the 11 agenda items he wants Texas legislators to tackle when they reconvene for the first special session of 2021 this week. The items on Abbott’s agenda include bail reform, election integrity, border security, social media censorship, legislative funding, family violence prevention, youth sports protections, abortion-inducing drug restrictions, supplemental payments through the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, critical race theory, and appropriations for tax relief, cybersecurity, and foster care.

The proclamation by Abbott, which was sent to Deputy Secretary of State Joe Esparza on Wednesday, noted that the session will begin on Thursday, July 8. Following the session’s start, it may last for up to 30 days.

This is the second special session Abbott has called since taking office. He also called a special session in 2017, which included an agenda comprised of 20 items.
