A post from the Leal’s restaurant’s Facebook page on Wednesday, which indicated the restaurant would be closing indefinitely, sent Amarillo Mexican food fans into a frenzy. However, the restaurant’s owner now says the popular eatery is planning to reopen in Amarillo.

Victor Leal announced in a Facebook post on Thursday that the restaurant is currently exploring its options to reopen in Amarillo after the COVID-19 pandemic forced most restaurants to close, at least temporarily.

“Truth is we don't yet know what our next steps are but we do believe there will be a Leal's in Amarillo's future,” Leal said.

The restaurant is a popular spot for Amarillo customers, with a menu consisting of local Mexican food favorites. According to Leal’s website, the restaurant traces its roots back to the El Nuevo Leal's Restaurant in Muleshoe in 1968. The current Amarillo location was opened in 2004.
