Amarillo Confederate Statue Vandalized

The United Daughters of the Confederacy statue in Amarillo’s Ellwood Park has been vandalized again.

Amid protests nationwide, it was discovered Wednesday afternoon that the statue had been vandalized. The phrase “I can't breathe” was written on the statue with the Confederacy term also being crossed out.

The statue, which has sat in Ellwood Park for nearly a century, was previously vandalized in 2018. In that instance, red spray paint was used to cover the statue’s base.

The debate over the statue has been a long one in Amarillo, with some calling for the statue to be destroyed or moved to a museum, while others demanded the statue remain standing.

We will update this story when additional information is available.
