AC Students Encouraged to Apply for July Research Internship

Amarillo College STEM majors and high school juniors and seniors planning to major in STEM fields are invited to apply for a select, weeklong research internship July 29-Aug. 2 featuring a hands-on bioremediation project.

The STEM fields are science, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics and physics, and students who are interested in AC’s Summer Research Internship have until July 1 to submit an application.

Applicants need not be planning to attend Amarillo College, but they must be planning to pursue a college-level STEM degree somewhere.

Those chosen will participate in an environmental science/bioremediation project titled: Optimizing the production of algae for use in Bio-fuels utilizing Nutrient Runoff – Consortium vs. Single Strains.

Interns will work on the project, which is funded by a Hispanic-Serving Institution-STEM Grant, from noon to 4 p.m. all five days at the STEM Research Center on AC’s Washington Street Campus. They will be tasked with constructing bioreactors and using them to compile date on the effects of various algae on nitrate levels in agriculture production.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone on a STEM pathway who wants to conduct real research in consultation with a faculty mentor,” said Gerek Burford, director of the STEM Research Center.

For more information about the Summer Research Internship, please contact Kali Key at (806) 371-5092 or kali.key@actx.edu. She will accept internship applications at Warren Hall, Room 101F, or via email.
