Amarillo College Accepting Applications for STEM Internships

"Amarillo College STEM majors and high school seniors planning to major in STEM fields are invited to apply for a select, week-long research internship in August featuring hands-on study in the College’s new greenhouse.

The STEM fields are science, technology, engineering and math, and students who are interested in AC’s Summer Research Internship have until May 14 to submit an application.

The internship project is Aug. 6-10, from 1:30-5:30 p.m. each day, and it is sponsored by the Hispanic-Serving Institution-STEM Grant, which funded AC’s new STEM Research Center (greenhouse) on the Washington Street Campus.

Those chosen will participate in the analysis and mapping of regional soil and water samples, catalogued according to pollutant levels, distribution of conductive metal ions, and abnormal fluctuations in the pH. Interns will present their work and findings at the Summer Research Internship closing event.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone on a STEM pathway who wants to conduct real research in consultation with a faculty mentor, and also to be among the first to utilize our new research facility,” said Gerek Burford, director of the STEM Research Center.

AC’s $2.4 million STEM Research Center is nearing completion and will be fully operational by August, Burford said.
