Amarillo City Council to Vote on Ditching Dumpsters for Carts

The Amarillo City Council will vote next week on approving the usage of trash carts for certain areas of Amarillo, instead of dumpsters.

On Tuesday night, Councilmembers will vote to amend the City of Amarillo Municipal Code to provide for trash collection using rollout carts in certain areas. The carts, if approved, will be utilized in areas with dead-end alleys, dumpsters on the street or walkway, dumpsters in front yards or areas that current utilize hand collection. Additional changes to the Code of Ordinances that will be considered Tuesday include: operation of a compost facility, bulk trash collection, permit fees and grammatical corrections.

According to the proposed ordinance change, the cart program will provide one free cart to every Amarillo household affected by the change. If the City of Amarillo determines that your cart was lost, stolen or destroyed, City officials will make arrangements for a new cart. It is unclear from the ordinance whether this cart will cost the resident. Additionally residents, will be required to place their carts outdoors between 5:00pm on the day before the scheduled collection day and no later than 7:00am on the scheduled day of collection. Carts must be removed from the curbside no later than 11:59pm on the day of collection.

Also, on Tuesday night, Councilmembers will be selecting a new mayor pro tempore. The mayor pro tempore is a recent addition to Council meetings, allowing a specific designation for a member to serve as the mayor, in the case that the mayor is unable to attend the meeting. Councilmember Eddy Sauer currently holds this role.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 12th in the Council Chambers of Amarillo City Hall (509 Southeast 7th Avenue). The meeting will begin at 5pm.
