APD Says Identity Theft Scam Targets Amarillo

An identity theft scam is targeting the Amarillo area.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers have received reports of an old scam reappearing in Amarillo. In the scam, the victim is sent a letter from someone claiming to be an account manager for a bank in Canada. The scammer asks the victim to contact them over email and says that the victim has inherited a large amount of money that has been left unclaimed by a deceased person's family, who happens to have the same last name as the victim. The scammers will ask the victim for identifying information that could be used to steal the victim's identity. The scammer will also try to have the victim pay before they can receive the inheritance, only to find out that there is no inheritance.

Residents are advised to be aware that this is a scam and that the information in the scam should not be believed.
