"Independent artist Yewande Austin will be the keynote speaker for West Texas A&M University’s Social Justice Conference at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28 in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center, Legacy Hall. Her presentation will focus on “Engaging with Diverse Populations in the Community.”
The presentation is sponsored by the WTAMU Distinguished Lecture Series and is free and open to the public.
Austin, an artist, activist and ambassador, has dedicated her life to confronting some of the world’s greatest socioeconomic challenges through her music and public appearances. She has achieved fame as a musical artist, but her work as an activist, award-winning lecturer and honorary U.S. Cultural Ambassador rank as her greatest achievements. She has been honored as a 2017 President Barack Obama Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, a 2013, 2014 and 2017 CNN Award nominee and 2015 TED Speaker.
In addition to her music, Austin remains dedicated to empowering others through her humanitarian organization, Change Rocks Foundation. This group, which began as a one-woman movement, has led to the establishment of various socioeconomic empowerment programs through a combination of capacity building, education and the arts.
