AISD Board Commissions Election Procedures Report

The Amarillo Independent School District board of trustees voted on Monday to commission a report regarding single-member districts for school board elections.

On Monday, the board voted 7-0 to approve commissioning a report over new election possibilities for Amarillo ISD. The report was being promoted as a possible first step at a transition to single member districts for school board elections.

As we reported on Monday, voters currently elect AISD trustees through a cumulative voting system. Under this system, voters are given three to four votes (depending on the election year) to spread around to whichever candidates they please.

No final decisions over a change in election procedure were approved by the board on Monday. The next school district election in May of 2019, in which three incumbents (board president Jim Austin, F. Scott Flow and John Betancourt) will face re-election.
