The oldest pool in Amarillo is no longer open for business.
According to the City of Amarillo, the pool at Thompson Park has been closed due to structural issues. Officials say the pool was found unsafe for further use following numerous inspections.
As the oldest public swimming pool in Amarillo, the Thompson Park pool has undergone a number of renovations, with the first conducted in 1954. The pool was first opened in 1931.
In a statement, the City’s director of Parks and Recreation said the decision to close the pool was a difficult one, but the City feels it is the best thing for “public safety.”
“This decision is entirely based on the issue of public safety. Thompson Pool has been in existence for 87 years, and the pool has become unsafe,” said Michael Kashuba. “It is no longer feasible or possible to repair or renovate the pool while also maintaining standards of public safety. We have initiated an asset management plan for the entire Parks and Recreation Department. Once this plan is complete, we will have a better understanding of the current state of department assets, and we will be able to plan the budget and resources accordingly.”
With the closing of the Thompson Park pool, three public swimming pools remain in operation in Amarillo.
