Amarillo Fighter Headlines Madison Square Garden

A mixed martial arts fighter from Amarillo's Nick's Fight Club headlined an event at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

John King, an Amarillo-based fighter, appeared in the main event of the Glory 48 kickboxing event held at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York on Friday night. King appeared in the event opposite the debuting Brazilian Thiago Silva.

King was accompanied to the ring by Raymond Wood, another Amarillo fight favorite. The appearance in the ring marked the second time in two years that King has appeared at a major televised MMA event. King was also a competitor, along with Wood, at 2016's Bellator 166.

During the fight, King landed more of his shots than Silva, accounting for about 49 percent versus 40 percent for the Brazilian. However, in the end, Silva claimed victory by unanimous decision over the Nick's Fight Club favorite.

While disappointed with the outcome of the fight, Nick's Fight Club was incredibly proud of the performance put on by King. In a posting to Facebook, Nick's Fight Club congratulated King on his strong performance.

"Congratulations John King you fought a great fight but unfortunately didn’t get the win," the gym posted online. "What an honor to be a part of your team! Proud of you!"
