Texas Attorney General is siding with local Republican Chip Hunt in her lawsuit seeking to close the Texas GOP’s primary elections.
The lawsuit, which names Hunt and the Texas GOP as plaintiffs, was filed earlier this year against the State of Texas and the Texas Secretary of State. The lawsuit claims that Texas law prohibiting closed primaries is unconstitutional and that it allows non-Republicans to have a say in who the party nominates.
Ken Paxton, on behalf of the State of Texas, filed a joint motion with Hunt and the Texas GOP asking for the court to enter judgement that the open primary requirement violates the first amendment.
In a post on X.com, Paxton urged the Secretary of State to join him “instead of fighting this lawsuit with expensive out-of-state lawyers.”
