Amarillo City Council is set to hold a special meeting on Thursday to address recent flooding and severe weather.

Following the call to order, invocation, pledge, and public comment, the council will consider two items.

Item 5A is “a resolution confirming and continuing the Mayor’s Declaration of Disaster. The declaration was originally signed by Mayor Cole Stanley on June 1st and was prompted due to “the threat of widespread flooding.” The declaration will be automatically rescinded unless the council votes to continue it.

Violation of the declaration “is punishable by a Class C misdemeanor by a fine not to exceed $500 or as authorized by Government Code §418.173 and adopted in the city’s emergency plan by a fine not to exceed $1,000 or confinement in jail for a term not to exceed 180 days, whichever is greater.”

The draft resolution authorizing the continuation of the declaration further states that “the use of all available resources of the City of Amarillo that are reasonably necessary to cope with the disaster are hereby authorized.”

Item 5B is a $98,965.58 contract to be awarded to United Rentals “for a temporary pump used to remove water from Playa 7 Greenways Lake.”

The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber at Amarillo City Hall. While regular meetings are now scheduled for 3:00 pm, this special meeting is scheduled for 12:30 pm. The next regular meeting of the council is scheduled for Tuesday, June 13th.
