Amarillo Mayor-elect Cole Stanley’s vote total from Saturday’s city election has made history.

According to unofficial vote totals from Saturday night’s election, Stanley received 15,978 votes in his bid to become mayor. This total represents the largest number of votes ever received by a mayoral candidate in Amarillo history.

Stanley’s vote share surpassed the previous record for the most votes received in a mayoral election in the city’s history, which was held by former Mayor Debra McCartt. McCartt received 15,480 votes in her first run for mayor in 2005. Just behind McCartt, former Mayor Jerry Hodge previously held the second place spot for most votes received, thanks to his 1979 showing against challenger Franklin Jeffers. In that race, Hodge received 15,292 votes and won re-election.

Beyond Stanley’s strong showing, City Council Place 2 candidate Don Tipps also received the highest number of votes for a City Council candidate in nearly two decades. Tipps received 17,042 votes in this year’s election, accounting for the most votes received by a candidate since former City Commissioner Robert Keys was re-elected in 2005 with 17,353 votes.
