While six candidates in Amarillo are hoping to replace outgoing Mayor Ginger Nelson this Saturday, the Panhandle hub won’t be the only city in the state hosting a mayoral election.

On Saturday, May 6, numerous other cities in Texas will be headed to the polls to pick their next mayor. Some cities have especially competitive races, while other cities already expect to know their next elected leader come Election Day.

Here’s a look at some of the top mayoral elections to watch across Texas, and who is running in each race.

Dallas | Incumbent Mayor Eric Johnson — Running for Re-Election

In Dallas, Mayor Eric Johnson is seeking re-election to his second term in office. This year, Johnson is facing only one challenger — write-in candidate Kendal Richardson. While nothing is for sure, Johnson, an attorney who previously served in the Texas House, is expected to win re-election.

Fort Worth | Incumbent Mayor Mattie Parker — Running for Re-Election

After winning a high-profile election in 2021 to replace outgoing Mayor Betsy Price, Mayor Mattie Parker is back on the ballot again in Fort Worth. This year, Parker is facing five opponents: Ken Bowens Jr., Jennifer Castillo, Alyson Kennedy, Chris Rector, and Adrian Smith. Parker has the endorsement of most major groups in Fort Worth and is facing primary opposition from Castillo. However, most pundits have predicted Parker as likely to win a second term.

Arlington | Incumbent Mayor Jim Ross — Running for Re-Election

Arlington Mayor Jim Ross is seeking re-election to another term in office in what is expected to be an interesting matchup against realtor Amy Cearnal. The race has had its primary focus on economic development. While Ross is favored to win, pundits are not counting Cearnal’s candidacy.

San Antonio | Incumbent Mayor Ron Nirenberg — Running for Re-Election

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg is running for another term in office after dispatching longtime rival, former City Councilman Greg Brockhouse, in the city’s 2021 election. This year, Nirenberg is facing eight opponents in his bid for re-election.

Nirenberg’s election this year has been widely predicted, but the Mayor is still facing some formidable competition in the form of Christopher Schuchardt, a San Antonio business owner.
