Local Navy veteran Jason N. Tillery is the latest candidate to join the growing list of contenders seeking spots on the Amarillo City Council.

On Monday, Tillery filed his paperwork with the Amarillo City Secretary to seek the Place 1 seat on the City Council currently held by retiring incumbent Elaine Hays. Tillery, 42, is a retired U.S. Navy veteran who has been an Amarillo resident for nearly two years since his retirement. Tillery said, while originally being from Fort Worth, he served active duty in Amarillo from 2009 until 2012, and knew Amarillo was where he wanted to make his home.

Regarding why he is running for office, Tillery says he believes every person should serve their community and he is hoping to do so as a representative for local citizens.

“I believe it’s every citizen’s duty to give something back to our community,” Tillery said. “This is my way of doing that.”

Tillery joins U.S. Marine Corps veteran Hobert “Gunny” Brown and construction company owner Cole Stanley in the race for Amarillo City Council Place 1.

Candidates have until Friday to file for a spot on the ballot. Election Day is May 1.
