Voters in Canyon Independent School District will see at least one contested race on their ballots this May.

According to Canyon ISD officials, Place 3 incumbent Trustee Randy Darnell has drawn a challenger in Zack Smith. Darnell was first elected in 2005 and is up for another four year term on the Board of Trustees. Meanwhile, Smith is a political newcomer.

On Smith’s Facebook page, he describes why he is running, saying, “I believe in the education system we have established and want the opportunity to give back to the community that has given so much to my family.”

In addition to Darnell and Smith, incumbents Bill Jenkins (Place 4), Matt Parker (Place 5), and Jenni Winegarner (Place 6) have all filed to run for office again in May.

Candidates who are interested in running for office can file through Friday. Election Day is May 1.
