Amarillo Area TxDOT Engineer to Retire

Randy Hochstein, P.E., recently announced he will retire as the Amarillo area engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Amarillo District, effective Aug. 31.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University, Hochstein began his career with TxDOT in July 1992 – a career path that took him through many roles – all within the Amarillo District. He began his career as an engineering assistant in the District Design Office. From there, he worked in the Amarillo Area Office where he was involved in construction contract management and project development.

Hochstein became the assistant Amarillo area engineer after obtaining his Professional Engineer’s License in 1999. He has also served as the District’s design engineer, Dumas area engineer, and Canyon area engineer before returning to the assistant Amarillo area engineer role. He has served as the Amarillo area engineer since October 2016.

Among Hochstein’s accomplishments to design projects are the reconstruction of Interstate 27 in Amarillo, the US 60/SH 136 interchange, and the US 60/FM 1912 interchange.

“In his current assignment, Randy has overseen an unprecedented volume of construction work in the Amarillo area – 16 projects with a total contract amount of approximately $300 million,” says Amarillo District Engineer Brian Crawford. “Randy has been instrumental in major enhancements to Interstates 40 and 27, as well as the expansion of SL 335 in Amarillo. His contributions will have a lasting impact on our community.”

“While I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life, I can’t help but look back on a career that afforded me the opportunity to work on important transportation projects alongside colleagues that helped me grow in my career while helping to meet the transportation needs of our growing community,” says Hochstein.

Hochstein does plan to eventually return to the transportation field in a new capacity after spending some quality time with wife of 16 years, Marita, and his two daughters and son. He hopes to sneak in a little more golf, too.
