Amarillo Police Investigate Accident Involving Pedestrian

Amarillo Police are investigating a Sunday accident that involved a pedestrian on Amarillo Boulevard.

According to APD, in the late evening of July 7th, officers were attempting to make a field stop on a subject that had allegedly been seen walking through traffic causing a “traffic problem.” Officers say David Soto, 66, was walking westbound on Amarillo Boulevard crossing North Grand when he entered an unsafe intersection, causing vehicles to hit their brakes. Some vehicles honked at the Soto, with the subject continuing to walk westbound on the sidewalk.

Officers attempted to check the welfare of the pedestrian and as they were contacting him, he began to walk backwards, northbound, into Amarillo Boulevard. Officers reportedly told Soto to get out of the road and he continued walking into traffic. Soto walked in front of an eastbound 2003 Chevy truck driven by a 24-year-old male. Soto was then run over by a Hyundai four-door sedan driven by a 27-year-old male, which was also going eastbound.

Authorities report Soto died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Justice of the Peace Robert Taylor has ordered an autopsy.

This incident is under investigation by the APD Traffic Investigation Squad.
