Bending to Petition Pressure, Nelson Says City Plans to Reestablish Two Chipping Sites

Mayor Ginger Nelson said two chipping sites could be returning to Amarillo, in a video released on Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, Nelson announced in a social media video the City's intention to reopen two chipping sites. Nelson dubbed the sites "brush recycle locations" in the video and stated that official hours and locations for the facilities have yet to be decided.

"Over the last year, I've heard a lot of conversation over the brush sites that the City had to close to comply with environmental concerns and regulations regarding landfills," Nelson said in the video.

Nelson also ended the video by saying, "thank you for your feedback."

The move comes as a petition drive was started last week to send six issues to a future ballot in Amarillo. One of the items on the petition was to ask voters to direct the City to reopen the chipping sites in Amarillo. Organizers say the petitions have already collected thousands of signatures in support of ordering an election and thus has pressured the City of Amarillo on the six issues.

City Councilmembers made a public move to close the chipping sites in Amarillo last year, which generated controversy. Since that time many residents have spoken at City Council meetings, demanding a reopening of the sites.

No details have been released for a timeline on when residents can expect the sites to reopen.
