FBI: Violent Crime Increased in Amarillo in 2017

Violent crime saw an increase in the Amarillo area during 2017, new statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation show.

According to the 2017 “Crime in the United States” report released by the FBI on Monday, violent crime in the Amarillo metropolitan area saw an increase in 2017 over 2016. In 2017, 1,680 violent crime incidents were reported in the Amarillo metro area, with 1,518 coming from Amarillo alone. This number was up from 1,560 instances in the entire area reported in 2016, the report shows.

Overall, this increase translates to a total of 634.1 violent crime reports per 100,000 residents during 2017. That number is up from 592.7 reports per 100,000 residents during the previous fiscal year.

During the same time, there was a slight decrease in cases of property crimes in the greater Amarillo area. While Amarillo’s property crime number dropped slightly, the drop is credited to a significant overall drop from the metropolitan area in property crimes. The property crime decrease agreed with an overall property crime decrease statewide, according to the statistics.
